The Zodiac War · Episode 3
Aries Declares War
Dawn over the border of fire and sun

At sunrise, ten thousand fire banners covered the eastern horizon.
Aries rode at the front of his army, the point of his spear glowing white. Behind him marched the rams of the Ember Guard, each carrying a shield forged from volcanic glass. He demanded that Leo surrender himself and the stolen crown before the final bell of morning. If Leo refused, the Solar Kingdom would be treated as an enemy of all twelve realms.
Leo climbed the outer wall alone. He carried Virgo's crystal memory, but the image inside had already begun to decay. Without proof, the truth would sound like fear. Below him, soldiers who had once fought side by side now waited for permission to become enemies.
He called to Aries and reminded him of the winter at Ash Canyon, when they had held the northern pass together for six nights. Aries remembered. That was why his anger hurt. ‘The friend I knew would have trusted me with the crown's warning,’ he answered.
Leo raised the vial. A fragment of the false king appeared above the battlefield, wearing Leo's face. Murmurs moved through both armies, but before Virgo could stabilize the memory, an unseen force shattered it. Silver dust blew toward the border and vanished into the earth.
The final bell began to ring. Halfway through its first note, the ground split between both armies. Black stone rose from the fault in the shape of a door. Around its edge appeared twelve zodiac symbols—and an empty place waiting for one more.
Scorpio's voice came through Leo's communication crystal. He had reached the forbidden temple beneath his own kingdom and found the same symbol carved into its deepest wall. ‘Do not let Aries strike it,’ he warned. ‘The Gate does not open with a key. It opens with war.’
But the thing behind the door understood pride. It spoke in the voices of fallen soldiers, telling Aries that Leo had arranged every death. It spoke to Leo in the voice of his father, calling surrender a disgrace to the sun. The two commanders raised their weapons before either realized the words were not their own thoughts.
A young soldier stumbled across the boundary. Both armies mistook the movement for an attack. Arrows rose. Leo threw a shield of sunlight over the field while Aries burned the arrows from the sky. For one breath, fire and sun worked together again.
The Gate still opened a finger's width. Cold darkness poured through the crack, carrying the outline of a crown with thirteen points. Aries lowered his spear. Leo descended from the wall. The war had not begun—but the enemy had learned exactly how close it could bring them.
In the darkness behind the door, the forgotten king smiled. Three of the twelve symbols were already glowing.
