The Northern Vault Opens

The Northern Vault had one lock for every century. Capricorn opened all ten before dawn.

Inside waited a machine built by the founders after they forged the crown. Its twelve rings could seal the Thirteenth Gate forever, but only by separating every kingdom from the others. No shared roads. No common sky. No memory that the alliance had ever existed.

Capricorn had spent his life preparing for impossible choices. He measured the machine, tested its ancient gears, and wrote the order that would activate it. Duty told him to save twelve kingdoms even if it destroyed the realm they formed together.

Aquarius arrived carrying water from the broken border. In its surface, Capricorn saw ordinary people sharing food, boats, and shelter across kingdom lines. The alliance was wounded, not imaginary. Saving its buildings while erasing its bonds would complete the forgotten king's work.

Capricorn closed eleven locks and left one open. Instead of activating the machine, he removed its central compass—the only device able to locate all thirteen symbols at once.

The compass pointed south toward the Drowned Archive. Twelve lights moved together around its rim. At the center, the thirteenth light was no longer waiting. It was moving toward them.
